RESUMEN

Fabrication of highly aligned fibers by far-field electrospinning is a challenging task to accomplish. Multiple studies present advances in the alignment of electrospun fibers which involve modification of the conventional electrospinning setup with complex additions, multi-phased fabrication, and expensive components. This study presents a new collector design with an origami structure to produce highly-aligned far-field electrospun fibers. The origami collector mounts on the rotating drum and can be easily attached and removed for each round of fiber fabrication. This simple, effective, and inexpensive technique yields high-quality ultra-aligned fibers while the setup remains intact for other fabrication types. The electrospun poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL) fibers were assessed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fiber diameter distribution, water contact angle (WCA), Fast Fourier Transform analysis (FFT), surface plot profile, and pixel intensity plots. We thoroughly explored the impact of influential parameters, including polymer concentration, injection rate, collector rotation speed, distance from the collector to the tip, and needle gauge number on fibers' quality and alignment. Moreover, we employed machine learning algorithms to predict the outcomes and classify the high-quality fibers instead of low-quality productions.

Digital technology and literacy can heighten the transformation of teaching and learning in higher education institutions (HEIs). This study uncovers the extent to which digital technologies have been used to advance the teaching and learning process in HEIs, and the barriers and bottlenecks to why it may not have been effectively implemented across the HEIs. The study used nine selected countries in Latin America (LATAM) based on the main focus of the educators, commercial, and financial investors; to show the level of impact/implications of computer technologies on the teaching and learning processes. We applied a two-step (mixed) methodology (through a quantitative and qualitative lens) for the research investigation, using data collected from survey we administered to faculty members in HEIs across the different countries in LATAM. In turn, we implemented a Text Mining technique (sentiment and emotional valence analysis) to analyze opinions (textual data) given by the participants to help determine challenges and obstacles to using the digital technologies for teaching and learning in the region. Quantitatively, we applied a Kruskal-Wallis H-test to analyze the collected multiple choice and ranked items in the questionnaire in order to identify prominent factors that consummately influence the reach, barriers, and bottlenecks, and where the differences may lie across the different LATAM countries. The results show that the users upheld the emphasis on lack of training, infrastructures and resources, access to internet and digital platforms, as the main challenges to the teaching-learning process. The study also empirically discussed and shed light on critical factors the HEIs, particularly in LATAM, should resolve and adopt in support of the decision-making strategies, operational policies and governance, financial investments, and policymaking, at a time when "digital technologies" have become an inevitable and indispensable part of education and learning.

Abstract This study investigates whether trust in government policies has a mediation effect between the students' perception of COVID-19 health risk and their life satisfaction. In order to test the mediation effect, this study utilizes data collected from undergraduate students at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico by means of online survey. The survey yielded 95 usable data out of 97. The valid results were tested via generalized linear model (GLM) Mediation approach for the mediation. Empirical findings of Delta method affirm the mediation (estimate = 0.4445, β = 0.474, z = 3.699, p < .001) role of trust in government as a mediator between students' perception of COVID-19 health risk and their life satisfaction. In other words, Mexican undergraduate students are of the view that trusting government plays a crucial role as a mediator between their perception of coronavirus health risk and life satisfaction. These findings may guide the governments' policy making efforts and motivate them to support their initiatives with trust-building efforts.


Resumo Este estudo investiga se a confiança nas políticas governamentais tem um efeito de mediação na percepção dos estudantes sobre o risco de saúde da COVID-19 e a satisfação de vida. A fim de testar o efeito de mediação, o estudo utiliza dados recolhidos de estudantes universitários do Tecnológico de Monterrey, no México. O inquérito produziu 95 dados utilizáveis de um total de 97. Os resultados válidos foram testados por meio da abordagem de mediação do modelo linear generalizado (GLM). Os resultados empíricos do método Delta afirmam (estimativa = 0,4445, β = 0,474, z = 3,699, p < .001) o papel de confiança no governo como mediador entre a percepção dos estudantes sobre o risco de saúde da COVID-19 e sua satisfação de vida. Em outras palavras, para os estudantes de graduação mexicanos a confiança no governo desempenha papel crucial como mediador entre suas percepções sobre o risco de saúde do coronavírus e a satisfação de vida. As conclusões do estudo podem orientar os esforços dos governos na elaboração de políticas e motivá-los a apoiar iniciativas de criação de confiança.

Abstract This paper aims to assess the differences and associations of the effect of COVID-19 on sleep habits, sleep quality, and burnout symptoms among faculty members of higher education in Mexico. This was a cross-sectional study with a total sample of 214 faculty members of higher education from Mexico between May 18th and June 10th of 2020. We applied questionnaires containing sociodemographic and specific questions regarding sleep habits, sleep quality, and burnout symptoms. The results show that during COVID-19 faculty members delayed their bedtime and rise time. No change was found with weekdays time in bed, however, during weekends, time in bed was more than an hour shorter. Social jetlag decreased significantly during COVID-19. Furthermore, during COVID-19, those who reported low sleep quality were more likely to report higher symptoms of emotional exhaustion and those who slept less on weekends were more likely to report higher symptoms of depersonalization. These results suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic may have an effect on sleep and sleep quality and burnout symptoms of faculty members from higher education in Mexico.


Resumo Este trabalho visa avaliar as diferenças e associações do impacto da COVID-19 sobre hábitos de sono, qualidade do sono e sintomas de burnout entre os docentes de ensino superior no México. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com amostra total de 214 docentes, realizado entre 18 de maio e 10 de junho de 2020. Foram aplicados questionários contendo questões sociodemográficas e específicas sobre hábitos de sono, qualidade do sono e sintomas de burnout. Os resultados mostram que durante a pandemia os docentes atrasaram a hora de dormir e acordar. Nenhuma alteração foi observada com relação ao tempo de semana na cama, porém nos finais de semana o tempo na cama era mais de uma hora menor. O jetlag social diminuiu significativamente durante a COVID-19. Além disso, durante a pandemia, aqueles que relataram baixa qualidade do sono eram mais propensos a relatar sintomas mais fortes de exaustão emocional, e aqueles que dormiam menos nos fins de semana eram mais propensos a relatar sintomas mais fortes de despersonalização. Esses resultados sugerem que a pandemia de COVID-19 pode ter um efeito sobre a qualidade do sono e causar sintomas de burnout nos integrantes do corpo docente do ensino superior no México.

The internet of things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm of educational applications and innovative technology in the current era. While capabilities are increasing day by day, there are still many limitations and challenges to utilizing these technologies within E-Learning in higher educational institutes (HEIs). The IoT is well-implemented in the United States of America (USA), United Kingdom (UK), Japan, and China but not in developing countries, including Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc. Few studies have investigated the adoption of IoT in E-Learning within developing countries. Therefore, this research aims to examine the factors influencing IoT adoption for E-Learning to be utilized in HEIs. Further, an adoption model is proposed for IoT-based E-Learning in the contexts of developing countries and provides recommendations for enhancing the IoT adoption for E-Learning in HEIs. The IoT-based E-Learning model categorizes these influencing factors into four groups: individual, organizational, environmental, and technological. Influencing factors are compared along with a detailed description in order to determine which factors should be prioritized for efficient IoT-based E-Learning in HEIs. We identify the privacy (27%), infrastructure readiness (24%), financial constraints (24%), ease of use (20%), support of faculty (18%), interaction (15%), attitude (14%), and network and data security (14%), as the significant E-Learning influencing factors on IoT adoption in HEIs. These findings from the researcher's perspective will show that the national culture has a significant role in the individual, organizational, technological, and environmental behavior toward using new technology in developing countries.

Fetal testis growth involves cell influx and extensive remodeling. Immediately after sex determination in mouse, macrophages enable normal cord formation and removal of inappropriately positioned cells. This study provides new information about macrophages and other immune cells after cord formation in fetal testes, including their density, distribution, and close cellular contacts. C57BL6J mouse testes from embryonic day (E) 13.5 to birth (post-natal day 0; PND0), were examined using immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and RT-qPCR to identify macrophages (F4/80, CD206, MHCII), T cells (CD3), granulocytes/neutrophils (Ly6G), and germ cells (DDX4). F4/80+ cells were the most abundant, comprising 90% of CD45+ cells at E13.5 and declining to 65% at PND0. Changes in size, shape, and markers (CD206 and MHCII) documented during this interval align with the understanding that F4/80+ cells have different origins during embryonic life. CD3+ cells and F4/80-/MHCII+ were absent to rare until PND0. Ly6G+ cells were scarce at E13.5 but increased robustly by PND0 to represent half of the CD45+ cells. These immunofluorescence data were in accord with transcript analysis, which showed that immune marker mRNAs increased with testis age. F4/80+ and Ly6G+ cells were frequently inside cords adjacent to germ cells at E13.5 and E15.5. F4/80+ cells were often in clusters next to other immune cells. Macrophages inside cords at E13.5 and E15.5 (F4/80Hi/CD206+) were different from macrophages at PND0 (F4/80Dim/CD206-), indicating that they have distinct origins. This histological quantification coupled with transcript information identifies new cellular interactions for immune cells in fetal testis morphogenesis, and highlights new avenues for studies of their functional significance.

In recent years, wearable contact lenses for medical applications have attracted significant attention, as they enable continuous real-time recording of physiological information via active and noninvasive measurements. These devices play a vital role in continuous monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP), noninvasive glucose monitoring in diabetes patients, drug delivery for the treatment of ocular illnesses, and colorblindness treatment. In specific, this class of medical devices is rapidly advancing in the area of drug loading and ocular drug release through incorporation of electrospun fibers. The electrospun fiber matrices offer a high surface area, controlled morphology, wettability, biocompatibility, and tunable porosity, which are highly desirable for controlled drug release. This article provides an overview of the advances of contact lens devices in medical applications with a focus on four main applications of these soft wearable devices: (i) IOP measurement and monitoring, (ii) glucose detection, (iii) ocular drug delivery, and (iv) colorblindness treatment. For each category and application, significant challenges and shortcomings of the current devices are thoroughly discussed, and new areas of opportunity are suggested. We also emphasize the role of electrospun fibers, their fabrication methods along with their characteristics, and the integration of diverse fiber types within the structure of the wearable contact lenses for efficient drug loading, in addition to controlled and sustained drug release. This review article also presents relevant statistics on the evolution of medical contact lenses over the last two decades, their strengths, and the future avenues for making the essential transition from clinical trials to real-world applications.

Recent trends in educational technology have led to emergence of methods such as teaching analytics (TA) in understanding and management of the teaching-learning processes. Didactically, teaching analytics is one of the promising and emerging methods within the Education domain that have proved to be useful, towards scholastic ways to make use of substantial pieces of evidence drawn from educational data to improve the teaching-learning processes and quality of performance. For this purpose, this study proposed an educational process and data mining plus machine learning (EPDM + ML) model applied to contextually analyze the teachers' performances and recommendations based on data derived from students' evaluation of teaching (SET). The EPDM + ML model was designed and implemented based on amalgamation of the Text mining and Machine learning technologies that builds on the descriptive decision theory, which studies the rationality behind decisions the learners are disposed to make based on the textual data quantification and statistical analysis. To this effect, the study determines pedagogical factors that influences the students' recommendations for their teachers, what role the sentiment and emotions expressed by the students in the SET play in the way they evaluate the teachers by taking into account the gender of the teachers. This includes how to automatically predict what a student's recommendation for the teachers may be based on information about the students' gender, average sentiment, and emotional valence they have shown in the SET. Practically, we applied the Text mining technique to extract the different sentiments and emotions (intensities of the comments) expressed by the students in the SET, and then utilized the quantified data (average sentiment and emotional valence) to conduct an analysis of covariance and Kruskal Wallis Test to determine the influential factors, as well as, how the students' recommendation for the teachers differ by considering the gender constructs, respectively. While a large proportion of the comments that we analyzed (n = 85,378) was classified to be neutral and predominantly interpreted to be positive in nature considering the sentiments (76.4%), and emotional valence (88.2%) expressed by the students. The results of our analysis shows that for the students' comments which contain some kind of positive or negative sentiment (23.6%) and emotional valence (11.8%); that females students recommended the teachers taking into account the sentiments (p = .000). While the males appear to be slightly borderline in terms of emotions (p = .056) and sentiment (p = .077). Also, the EPDM + ML model showed to be a good predictor and efficient method in determining what the students' recommendation scores for the teachers would be, going by the high and acceptable values of the precision (1.00), recall (1.00), specificity (1.00), accuracy (1.00), F1-score (1.00) and zero error-rate (0.00) which we validated using the k-fold cross-validation method, with 63.6% of optimal k-values observed. In theory, we note that not only does the proposed method (EPDM + ML) proves to be useful towards effective analysis of SET and its implications within the educational domain. But can be utilized to determine prominent factors that influences the students' evaluation and recommendation of the teachers, as well as helps provide solutions to the ever-increasingly need to advance and support the teaching-learning processes and/or students' learning experiences in a rapidly changing educational environment or ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Sexual education has become increasingly important as unhealthy sexual practices and subsequent health risks become more prevalent during adolescence. Traditional sex education teaching methodologies are limiting for digital natives exposed to various digital technologies. Harnessing the power of technology applications attractive to the younger generation may be a useful approach for teaching sex education. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to improve sexual health knowledge and understanding of the problems associated with unhealthy sexual practices and address sexual and reproductive health challenges experienced in a low-tech setting. METHODS: A participatory design approach was used to develop the digital gamified methodology. A sample of 120 secondary school students aged 11-15 were randomly assigned to either experimental or control group for each of the 3 teaching approaches: (1) gamified instruction (actual serious games [SG] in teaching); (2) gamification (GM; making nongames, such as game-like learning); and (3) traditional teaching (TT) methods. RESULTS: The SG and GM approaches were more effective than TT methods in teaching sexual health education. Specifically, the average scores across groups demonstrated an increase of mean scores from the pre- to posttest (25.10 [SD 5.50] versus 75.86 [SD 13.16]; t119=41.252; P<.001 [2 tailed]). Analysis of variance indicated no significant differences across groups for pretest scores (F2,117=1.048, P=.35). Significant differences across groups were evident in the posttest scores. Students in the SG and GM groups had higher average scores than the TT group (F2,117=83.98; P<.001). Students reported increased learning motivation, attitude, know-how, and participation in learning (P<.001) when using SG and GM approaches. CONCLUSIONS: Digital health technologies (particularly teaching and learning through gamified instruction and other novel approaches) may improve sexual health education. These findings may also be applied by practitioners in health care settings and by researchers wishing to further the development of sex education.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many areas of the human and organizational ventures worldwide. This includes new innovative technologies and strategies being developed by educators to foster the rapid learning-recovery and reinstatement of the stakeholders (e.g., teachers and students). Indeed, the main challenge for educators has been on what appropriate steps should be taken to prevent learning loss for the students; ranging from how to provide efficient learning tools/curriculum that ensures continuity of learning, to provision of methods that incorporate coping mechanisms and acceleration of education in general. For several higher educational institutions (HEIs), technology-mediated education has become an integral part of the modern teaching/learning instruction amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, when digital technologies have consequently become an inevitable and indispensable part of learning. To this effect, this study defines a hybrid educational model (HyFlex + Tec) used to enable virtual and in-person education in the HEIs. Practically, the study utilized data usage report from Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and Emotions and Experience Survey questionnaire in a higher education setting for its experiments. To this end, we applied an Exponential Linear trend model and Forecasting method to determine overall progress and statistics for the learners during the Covid-19 pandemic, and subsequently performed a Text Mining and Univariate Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine effects and significant differences that the teaching-learning experiences for the teachers and students have on their energy (learning motivation) levels. From the results, we note that the hybrid learning model supports continuity of education/learning for teachers and students during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study also discusses its innovative importance for future monitoring (tracking) of learning experiences and emotional well-being for the stakeholders in leu (aftermath) of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the enforced restrictions have harshly affected educational sectors in 161 countries around the world. With more than 1.6 billion students away from normal school life, the crisis threatens the teaching and learning processes and the students' emotional health. Herein, we present the result of a careful assessment of the feelings of over 13,000 students at high school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels across 36 campuses over 8 subsequent weeks from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results indicate a general low energy level and dominance of negative feelings among the students regardless of their academic levels. We have recorded 5 responses (being anxious, stressed, overwhelmed, tired, and depressed) as the most frequently reported feelings in the time of lockdown. Overall, 14% of those who have reported to suffer from these feelings have also identified a need for professional help in managing their feelings throughout the quarantine period. The current study also presents several strategies to combat the undesirable consequences of COVID-19 pandemic.

This study examined the impact of the professors' gender according to a student evaluation of teaching (SET) in a private university. The study took place in a private university (n = 103,833) on six different campuses in the north region of Mexico. The distribution of the professors' gender was analyzed according to semesters, campuses, and schools. Our findings suggested that when undergraduates evaluated their professors on specific criteria concerning teaching performance, they expressed their opinion regardless of the professors' gender. However, when being asked for a single overall evaluation, as whether they would recommend the professor as one of their best professors, the students tended to favor male professors over their female peers by a slight margin. While such perceptions might not be representative of the actual teaching quality, it would be interesting in the future to delve deeper into the causes of possible biases.

Centrifugal microfluidic platforms or lab-on-discs (LODs) have evolved into a popular technology for automating chemical and biological assays. LODs today enable scientists to implement and integrate different operational units, including fluid mixing, droplet generation, cell-sorting, gene amplification, analyte detection, and so forth. For an efficient design and cost-effective implementation of any microfluidic device, including LODs, theoretical analysis and considerations should play a more important role than they currently do. The theoretical analysis we will show is especially essential to the investigation of detailed phenomena at the small length scales and high-speed typical for LODs where a wide range of forces may be involved. Previous LOD review papers presented mostly experimental results with theory as an afterthought. Hence, a review paper focused on the theoretical aspects, and associated computational studies of LOD devices is an urgent need. In the present review paper, all previous computational studies on LOD devices are categorized as single-phase flows, two-phase flows, network simulation, and solids. For each of these categories, the governing equations and important formulas are presented and explained. Moreover, a handy scaling analysis is introduced to aid scientists when comparing different competing forces in LOD devices. We hope that by surveying and contrasting various theoretical LOD studies, we shed some light on existing controversies and reveal where additional theoretical work is needed.

Based on the concept of LEGO toys, a fiber probe analytical platform (FPAP) was developed as a powerful diagnostic tool offering higher sensitivity in detection of infectious agents compared to established methods. Using the form and the function of LEGO toys, this protocol describes a fiber-based, 96-well plate, which suspends a new class of chemically-designed, electrospun fibers within the assay. This clamping strategy allows both sides of the developed fiber mats to interact with biomolecules within the assay thus benefiting from the tailored chemical and physical properties of these fiber-based bioreceptors in attracting the biomolecules to the surface. The fabrication method of FPAP involves one-step electrospinning of the chemically designed fibers, 3D printing of the LEGO-like probing segments, and assembly of the device followed by ELISA procedure. FPAP follows the same principles of operation as that of a conventional enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), therefore, it can be run by lab technicians, expert in ELISA. FPAP was used for early diagnosis of Dengue fever and provided an 8-fold higher sensitivity while the limit of detection (LOD) was recorded to be in femto-gram per milliliter range which is significantly low when compared to other existing techniques or conventional assay. This platform allows different types of paper/fiber bio-receptive platforms to be incorporated within the design that promises simultaneous recognition of multiple infectious agents.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) as a term for a heart attack happens due to reduced blood flow to heart myocardium and lack of oxygen supply caused by plaques in the interior walls of coronary arteries. With respect to the importance of MI etiology, we aimed to study the relationship of MI and blood examination variables. METHODS: This study was conducted in Mazandaran Heart Center as a hospital-based case-control Comprising 894 participants including 465 cases and 429 controls, individually matched by sex and age. Considered blood markers were analyzed using routine laboratory methods and equipment. RESULTS: Of all participants, 64.3% of the cases and 51.0% of the controls were males with a mean age of 61.2 (±13.8) in cases and 62.4 (±14.) in controls. We could not find any differences between cases and controls for total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and alkaline-phosphatase (ALP) (P>0.05). However, levels of creatine-kinase-muscle/brain (CK-MB) (P<0.0001), fasting-blood-sugar (FBS) (P<0.0001), aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) (P<0.0001), alanine-transferase (ALT) (P<0.0001) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) (P=0.001) were significantly higher in cases compared to the controls (P<0.05). Multivariable analyses revealed that the risk of MI was associated with high levels of AST (adjusted OR=24.3, 95%CI=3.5±165.6, P=0.001) and LDL (adjusted OR=7.4, 95%CI=1.0±51.8, P=0.001). CONCLUSION: Our investigation indicated that the levels of CK-MB, FBS, AST, ALT and ESR were significantly higher in patients with MI. Besides, our findings showed that the risk of MI in cases with high levels of AST and LDL was about 24 and 7 times more than the control group respectively.

Glassy carbon nanofibers (GCNFs) are considered promising candidates for the fabrication of nanosensors for biosensing applications. Importantly, in part due to their great stability, carbon electrodes with sub-10 nm nanogaps represent an attractive platform for probing the electrical characteristics of molecules. The fabrication of sub-10 nm nanogap electrodes in these GCNFs, which is achieved by electrically stimulating the fibers until they break, was previously found to require fibers shorter than 2 µm; however, this process is generally hampered by the limitations inherent to photolithographic methods. In this work, to obtain nanogaps on the order of 10 nm without the need for sub-2 µm GCNFs, we employed a fabrication strategy in which the fibers were gradually thinned down by continuously monitoring the changes in the electrical resistance of the fiber and adjusting the applied voltage accordingly. To further reduce the nanogap size, we studied the mechanism behind the thinning and eventual breakdown of the suspended GCNFs by controlling the environmental conditions and pressure during the experiment. Following this approach, which includes performing the experiments in a high-vacuum chamber after a series of carbon dioxide (CO2) purging cycles, nanogaps on the order of 10 nm were produced in suspended GCNFs 52 µm in length, much longer than the ~2 µm GCNFs needed to produce such small gaps without the procedure employed in this work. Furthermore, the electrodes showed no apparent change in their shape or nanogap width after being stored at room temperature for approximately 6 months.
